在 1978 年的《Powerage》和 1979 年的《Highway to Hell》大获成功后，来自澳大利亚 AC/DC 终于走上了正轨。
但是一个噩耗很快使乐队落到了低谷：1980 年 2 月，主唱 Bon Scott 因酗酒去世。
对比同年另一个因喝酒去世的而失去乐队核心人物 John Bonham 而解散的 Led Zeppelin，AC/DC 没有因此而消沉，仅仅过去5个月，他们携新主唱 Brian Johnson 和新专辑 Back in Black 强势回归，从此开始了他们摇滚生涯长达30余年的下半场。
在这五个月里 AC/DC 显然不是一帆风顺，遭遇了各种来自自然环境的录音环境的阻碍，虽然 AC/DC 在台上表现的是一副摇滚明星的姿态，台下的 AC/DC 却是一直保持着可贵的低调，他们总是会把想表达的东西放在歌词的字里行间：

在《Back In Black》的歌词里面，死去的 Bon Scott 仿佛只是打了个盹，只是像往常一样烂醉一宿但是总是准点参加排练。我特别欣赏乐手们这样纪念战友的形式，我也知道战友去世的的时候乐队成员心都碎了，也考虑解散这个他们奋斗已久的乐队。最后还是Bon的父亲出面一锤定音：AC/DC是我儿子毕生的心血，希望你们能走下去。这一走就是三十余年直到今天。
